33Knots Wishing You a Happy Thanksgiving

We would like to start off by wishing all of our American visitors a Happy Thanksgiving weekend – we hope that you are fortunate to be sharing it with loved ones.

For those of you who are less familiar with this holiday, we will explain what the third Thursday of every November really represents. It is an annual tradition in the United States officially started in 1863, also known as the “First Thanksgiving”. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed this memorable event as a national celebration to thank God for guiding them safely to the New World. It also signified a military victory for the Americans and indicated the end of a long drought. In spirit of the celebration, a feast was arranged for the arriving colonists – Pilgrims and Americans – and lasted for three full days.

Today, American Thanksgiving is well known for its traditional menu, featuring a baked or roasted turkey. In addition, other seasonal dishes are also commonly served on the eve of this holiday, such as, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, sweet corn, and fall vegetables. To top off this mouth-watering selection, you may be lucky enough to have pumpkin pie for dessert.

Although it is commonly known as “Turkey Day” for younger generations, Thanksgiving is, and always will be, a religious tradition for all Americans (and Canadians, although they celebrate in October) to give thanks to God for a common purpose. Asides from being thankful for the historical victory of their ancestors, families often say grace for the happiness and safety of their loved ones.
