How to Strengthen Your Marriage

How to Strengthen Your Marriage or Relationship

Standing the Test of Time

Everyone wants that ideal relationship where no matter what problem God threw at them or the devil dealt them, they would pull through it.  It’s beautiful, right?  But let’s get real.  People want that type of relationship or marriage but they don’t want to put the effort into getting to that point, they just expect it.  They lay back; kick their feet up and leisure on.  To the point, marriage and relationships are work and they require it daily.  If you’re neglecting your work within your relationship don’t expect to have a strong bond between you and your partner.  If you put hard work into your marriage or relationship, you will reap what you sew.  If you don’t know where to start, ask God!

It’s NOT All About You

A lot of people have the mentality that if you want something from them, you have to do something for them first. For example:  God put a message in Peter’s heart that he should do something nice for his wife, Sheila.  Peter wants to but then he gets to thinking about how she hasn’t done anything for him in so long and decides to go against what God wanted him to do and gets her nothing.  Sometimes God calls us to take the first step even though we don’t want to.  Work on remembering that it’s not ALL about you and if you want it to be ALL about you, stay out of a relationship or marriage.

Communicating

Yeah, yeah, you’re rolling your eyes on this one but it’s important, it’s vital.  Communication is the tie to make sure you and your partner are on the same page.  Communication shows that you care, its shows a lot of things. A lot of people don’t communicate when they’re upset with their partner.  Instead, they walk around treating their partner rudely, expecting them to figure out what’s wrong.  Newsflash, people aren’t mind readers and it’s childish for anyone to expect that.  If you have a heavy heart or have something to say, say it but choose your words wisely.  Don’t waste time being upset.

Keep the Peanut Gallery Out Of Your Business

There will be times when your partner will work your nerves, it’s a given.  It could be because you’re stressed or aggravated, etc.  However, it’s wise not to tell everyone and their second cousin all the details, if any.  Sure, people like to vent but when you vent it allows some type of unspoken invitation for the peanut gallery to suddenly be a part of your relationship or marriage.  It not only creates unnecessary drama, it also sheds an inaccurate light on your partner and that’s not fair to them.  If you need to vent, try a therapist or someone who you trust to not get in your business and to not spread your business around.

Make Time for One Another

It can get so easy to get caught up in the whims of life, it really is.  Some days, months or years may be busier than others, but no matter what, always make an effort to spend time with one another.  You don’t have to plan an extravagant vacation or wine and dine at the most expensive restaurant!  You can simply have time alone at home with the phones turned off.  Cook a meal together; watch an old favorite film or game night.  It’s not where you spend time together; it’s how you do it.  That means no distractions, no rescheduling, just do it! Remember! The more effort you put in, the more you’ll get out.
