Keeping Your Promises | Its The Way of the Lord

Keeping Your Promises

Promises

There are many different types of promises.  A lot of people when they think of promises, they automatically think it’s a verbal commitment of something to a friend, but it’s not.  Promises can be very complex like signing a contract for a loan, mortgage or car loan. No matter what promise you agreed to, it’s always wise to keep your word.  If you signed a contract with the bank to pay back the loan you received, than honor that commitment and pay it.  If you promise a friend you’d be at their volunteer gig, be there.  There’s nothing more precious than honoring your word in a world that doesn’t value such things anymore.

Keeping your promises

Choices

In Matthew 5:33: “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.”  But if we’re going to be completely honest here, you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do.  Yes, it’s true and that’s because in life we have choices.  We can choose to do something or choose to not do one thing.  However, in life, all a person has in the world is their word and it means more than a lot of people know.  That’s why it’s so important to keep your word or promises because it reflects on you as a person.  A lot of people have tarnished their credibility with people because their unable to fulfill their word.  Below are ways to help you make the right promises, so you can fulfill them.

Be Careful What You Promise

Too often, people speak before they think.  They say what’s ever on their mind, especially when they’re in the heat of the moment.  However, it’s always wise to think before you speak because you can ultimately promise someone a helping hand or something, which later on, you realize that you can’t simply do for a multitude of reasons.  Or, simply, you’ll realize that you really don’t want to do what you promised after all. Before you throw out a promise, take the time to pray about the promise you want to give out.

Don’t Overextend Yourself

Everyone knows at least one person who is always overextending themselves to help others.  True, God will look at this action as a good deed but also be concerned that they’re burning themselves out.  It’s not always healthy to be constantly running around doing this and doing that because it leaves no personal time and enough time with God.  So, make sure the promises you’re offering fit around your personal time and God’s time.  This will help create a steady balance that so many people are lacking right now. As well, remember, it’s okay to say “no” once in a while.

Know What You’re Getting Into

It’s always advised on pretty much of anything and everything to do a little bit of homework.  That means, don’t sign up for a quantum physics class for fun and not read the curriculum and work load it consists of.  With that out there, it’s the same with promising to do something with or for someone.  For example: You’ve promised your best friend that you’ll help with their charity ball their doing.  The night before the charity ball, you discover that the minimum donation accepted is $500.00, something your bank account hasn’t seen in a while.

Get Up and Do As You Promised

People make promises everyday and don’t keep them.  Sure, something can pop up unexpectedly or a family crisis, but majority of the time, people don’t keep their promises because they get lazy.  Suddenly, they don’t want to do what they promised.  When that happens, it’s nothing more than the enemy attempting you to stop from keeping your word because like it says in 1John 2:5 “But whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him” The enemy has never kept its mission a secret, to steer people away from the path of the Lord.  To some this may seem like a trivial step for the enemy, but remember, a loose thread can unravel an entire garment. So, think before you promise, know what you’re promising and you’ll always be able to keep the promises you make.
