Unlike biblical myrrh, this incense does not come from the Commiphora tree. It is produced from the resin of the Styrax tree (Styrax benzoin), which has been used historically as a base incense in Orthodox regions, especially in Greece, the Balkans, and Russia.
The resin appears in solid, stone-like pieces with a dark red to brown hue.
