Red Smirna incense, often referred to as Red Myrrh in Orthodox tradition, is a natural aromatic resin cherished for its gentle fragrance and long-standing use in Eastern Christian worship.
Unlike biblical myrrh, this incense does not come from the Commiphora tree. It is produced from the resin of the Styrax tree (Styrax benzoin), which has been used historically as a base incense in Orthodox regions, especially in Greece, the Balkans, and Russia.
The resin appears in solid, stone-like pieces with a dark red to brown hue. When placed on glowing charcoal, it releases a soft, sweet, balsamic aroma with subtle vanilla notes, creating a calm and prayerful atmosphere without heaviness or bitterness. Because of its balanced scent, Red Smirna is well suited for both church use and personal prayer at home.
This incense is traditionally burned on its own or combined with essential oils to prepare custom incense blends in the Orthodox style. Our Red Smirna is pure, unblended, and free from artificial fragrances, carefully packed in sealed 20-gram bags to preserve its natural character.
