Once there was this girl who had four boyfriends.

She loved her fourth boyfriend much more than the others and so, she dressed him with the finest pieces of clothing. She fed him the most exquisite food and every delicacy you can think of. She treated him the best way possible and pampered him in every way. Only the best was good enough for him.

She was also extremely fond of her second boyfriend. She never lost the chance to show him off to neighbors and friends.  She was very proud of him even though she always had a secret fear in her heart, that he would someday leave her for somebody else.

She loved her third boyfriend as well. He was her most intimate. She always turned to him at every difficulty and trusted his guidance. He was always there for her, kind, considerate and patient.

Nevertheless, it was her first boyfriend who loved her the most. He had been with her since the beginning of time, always loyal. He contributed on everything she ever tried to achieve. He helped her gain all of her prosperity and wellbeing. He never left her out of his sight. But the girl didn’t love her first boyfriend. She hardly took notice of him and never gave him any kind of care.

Time passed and someday the girl got sick and realized her days were numbered. She thought of the good times she had, her wealth and her fancy life.

“ I have four boyfriends” she thought, “someone will be with me through my agony”.

So, she called her fourth boyfriend:

“I have always given you nothing but the finest. Now that I’m dying will you be with me and comfort me?”

“Not a chance!” replied the fourth boyfriend and that was the last thing he ever told her. Her heart was broken into thousands of pieces.

Then she called her third boyfriend:

“ I’ve been loving you all my life and gave my hardest effort for you. Now that I’m dying, will you be there for me and encourage me?”

“Oh, no! I really don’t care if you’re dying or not. When you‘ll be gone I will marry someone else!”.

Tears filled her eyes and her hopes were demolished.

Thus, she asked her second boyfriend:

“ I have always confided in you and you have always been by my side. We never parted, but now that I’m dying will you be with me and keep me company?”

“I’m afraid that I can’t be with you this time. The most I can do is walk with you to your grave.”

His answer was a burning arrow in her heart.

In the darkness of despair she heard a familiar voice:

“I’m here for you. I have always been here for you and will never leave you no matter where you go, no matter what you have done.”

She turned and saw her first boyfriend, undernourished, neglected and sad.

“Oh, Lord!” cried out the girl. “I should have taken care of you while I had the chance…”

You know, actually, we all have these four boyfriends in our lives. The fourth boyfriend is our body. No matter how hard we try to please it and make it look good, it will leave us when we die.

The third boyfriend is our fortune and assets. When we die, it will all go to someone else, most likely to the second boyfriend who is our family. They love us and help us through hard times, but they cannot escort us beyond the edge of the grave.

Did you guess who the first boyfriend – the one we should take the most care – is???
